2007 Turkey of the Year Christmas Gift Suggestion

Brett Favre and the Pac are dominating

Brett Favre completes 20 straight passes and ties John Elway’s record of 148 regular-season victories.

NFL – Brett Favre is still my MVP. I know a lot fans are on the Brady Bunch wagon, but Favre has done so much with so much less. He continues to impress me with his ability to use the entire field. Sure, many can question his crazy throws, but he has the guts to try and make the play. There is not a bigger “gamer” than Favre. I would love to see the Pack run the table and play for the Championship in Glendale, Arizona.

The Dallas/Jets game was a yawner. I am not sure if was stuff that makes you sleepy in the turkey or just a boring game. However, the Cowboys are solid and I can’t wait for yet another “Game of the Century” Packers and Cowboys this coming weekend. There will be as much hype in this one as we all saw in the Pats/Colts and that game did not disappoint us!

Peyton Manning made up for his embarrassing game a week ago by putting up his normal “Manny type” numbers on Thanksgiving night in Atlanta. Granted the Falcons are awful, but he moved the ball and benefited with Dallas Clark back in the lineup.

ASU falls short at home against USC – Boy, what a bummer for the Sun Devil nation. They did not look good. The team struggled on defense to stop the run as well as tackle. The O-line could not give Rudy Carpenter enough time to find his receivers as Arizona State continues to lead the country in giving up sacks. Hopefully, Coach Erickson and his staff have some nice recruits coming in.

For those of you who did not attend the game and watched it on ABC, did you notice the jerry-curl hair dew that Doug Flutie had going on? Damn! Wow! Doug, get some help with that lid!

What’s next for the Devils? A win over Arizona should give them a Fiesta Bowl appearance. I understand a lot of fans would love to see the Fiesta Bowl committee select the Devils for their at large pick, but for me, and I do not have ANY say even though I volunteer on the committee, I just hope they go somewhere else. The Holiday bowl would be great!
What I love about the Fiesta Bowl is that all the fans that travel to our great state. The economy gets such a big boost with all the visitors. Plus, it’s such a great experience for the student athletes, coaches, front offices, students and families who in most cases have never been to Arizona. Granted, if ASU earns to get picked, I will embrace them and their fans, however, for selfish reasons, I would prefer out of state teams.

On the flip side, the 5-6 Arizona Wildcats need to beat the Devils to possibly earn a trip to a bowl game. Six wins makes them eligible. The Cats haven’t been to a bowl game since 1998 meaning that a small bowl would love to select an Arizona squad. Their fans would definitely travel.

ASU gets blown out at home

ASU’s Troy Nolan walks off the field Thursday after USC defeated the Sun Devils 44-24.

What a turkey: Erickson is not allowing players to be interviewed leading up to the Territorial Cup. He has had an open door policy all season. The players should have an opportunity to talk to the media, which is the only way fans will have an opportunity to get a feel on how this team is feeling toward this huge game against the Wildcats, especially the 27 seniors. I think changing the policy is a joke. Rivalry games are such a big part of college football. Players and coaches should be able to soak in all the media attention. Granted, the media at times can be too much, but to close the door is ridiculous. Auburn/Alabama doesn’t close the door; OSU/Michigan would never; Texas/Texas A&M great story lines for the entire state; and there are soooo many more. Why does ASU have to be different.

Would you be against the NFL if they went away with media day during Superbowl. Fans love hearing all the quotes and “BS” storylines that come with such a big game. I am sorry Dennis, but you’re a turkey on this one. You’ve been great all year, but this is not right.

But, if they win, who cares right!
Black Friday: The day after Thanksgiving is always a great day of football as it starts the rivalry weekend. The traditional Nebraska/Colorado game was the first on the agenda. The Huskers traveled to in my opinion the best place to watch college football, Boulder, Colorado. A win by the Huskers means a possible trip to the Insight Bowl and a loss most likely coach Callahan’s job. By now you know the outcome, no bowl game and Callahan fired. Rumor had it that if the Huskers had won, Callahan still would have been fired and interim AD Tom Osborne would have coached the bowl game. I would have loved the Husker nation in Tempe with the legendary Tom Osborne directing traffic as well as the return of Sam Keller. We would have a lot of fun story lines to argue.

The Big 12 has been most competitive conference in 2007. It was great to see Texas A&M upset the Longhorns of Texas. As expected, but not quite like this, the Aggies Dennis Franchione resigned less than an hour after defeated Texas, his second win over the past two seasons. However in five years at A&M Franchione finished wit ha 32-28 record and just 19-21 in Big 12 games. I had a chance to play a couple rounds of golf with him earlier this year and found him to be a really great guy. I am disappointed that he lost his job, but he can now work on that golf game. Plus his contract ran 2012 and paid him a base of $2 million per year. He’ll be fine. I hear he is a possible candidate for the open SMU job.

McFadden for Heisman!

Michigan is looking for a new CARR with LES MILES!

No. 1 LSU falls in OT to Ar”KANSAS”. Heisman-worthy Darren McFadden rushed for three scores and threw for another to lift as LSU head coach Les Miles says “Ar”Kansas” to a 50-48 , triple OT victory. McFadden was the 2006 Heisman Trophy runner-up, rushed for 206 yards 32 carries and now has 1,725 yards rushing this season, breaking the single-season record of 1,647 he set last year.
West Virginia and Ohio State now have national championship hopes with the Hogs winning over LSU.

How about Hawai’I proving to the world that they are BCS worthy after beating Boise State. Most of America got to see Rainbow, I mean Warrior quarterback Colt Brennan break the major college career record for touchdown passes, throwing his 122nd in the first quarter for No. 14 Hawaii.

Saturday I got to go to my first Charlotte Bobcat game in North Carolina at the Charlotte Bobcats Arena (I know,no sponsor yet). The arena was very open. I loved the staff. They were welcoming everyone with hellos and asking how everyone’s Thanksgiving was. It was a nice touch!

I really like all the space in the arena. Not a lot of sponsor banners. The skyboxes were wide open and I didn’t see a bar similar to the Lexus Club. I was told there were two, but I couldn’t see them from my seats.

It was funny to see just one retired banner - No. 32 from not the Hornets or Bobcats but the WNBA’s Dawn Staley who played for the Charlotte Sting.

The PA guy was just awful! He kept say “Let’s Go Cats”, “Lets Go Cats” He would only say it twice and there was no music behind his voice. It was annoying and just plain awful. There sideline guy like Ceballos was pretty good. Their Lady Cats were average.

The game itself was great. A sellout crowd of 19,201 witness a stolen pass by Boston’s Paul Pierce with 4.7 seconds left to set up a 3 point winning bomb by who else, Ray Allen. Bobcats fall by one. Bummer for the home crowd, but a very entertaining game. As I was leaving I heard the radio post game show say it was tragic! Tragic? It was a closer game than most of the 19,201 fans figured upon entering the arena that night.

Odds and Ends from my trip to the Carolinas: The Big Rivalry football game in this part of the country (Carolinas) is Clemson at South Carolina. They met Saturday night. What I couldn’t stand is that the University of South Carolina is referred to as “USC” -Are you kidding me! There is only one USC and they play on the west coast. By the way, Clemson won the game on a FG as time expired -23-21.

College hoops rule out here - This is ACC Country and some other schools that you hear about only in March!

UNC, NC St., Duke, Clemson, Davidson, Gardner-Webb, Winthrop to name a fewl

Carolina Panthers - Awful! Fans sound so similar to Cardinal fans. The Cats only win on the road. They got beat bad by the Saints on Sunday. By the way, one of Carolina’s wins was at Arizona.

IMPORTANT: When ordering Ice Tea, and you like it unsweeten - you must order unsweeten! All ice tea in the Carolinas comes sweeten! Sucks!

Misc: Pete Sampras beats Roger Federer in a tennis exhibition. Are we going to see a Sampras comeback? Sampras never faced a break point and converted one of two against his opponent as he handed Federer a 7-6 (10-8), 6-4 defeat at the Venetian Macao arena, wrapping up a three-match Asian exhibition series between the two tennis greats.
On a sad note, the passing of former DBack Joe Kennedy who lost his life at only 28. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family. The reason for his death is still uncertain.
